Wave Type and
Size :
Good variety of waves from beach breaks to lava slabs and
even XXL tow-in breaks. Consistent and powerful winter
(Sept-April) swells from overhead to huge. Summer,
inconsistent, windier and much smaller, occasional A + days.
Equipment:
For the reef breaks your normal board and something to
handle large, powerful and often hollow waves. For the
beachbreaks and less demanding spots anything goes. Big wave
devotees may even get the chance to ride a 9’6” or tow
board. A light fullsuit will be plenty in midwinter, a
shorty most of the rest of the year and boardshorts or light
jacket summer and early autumn. Booties are not essential
but do provide good reef and urchin protection.
Climate and
water temperatures:
Arid subtropical climate moderated by NE trade winds. Very
little rain and lots of sunshine. Peak daytime temperatures
20C+ in winter and 30C+ in summer.
